Ohio Wins Five Awards at NCPG Conference

Ohio’s gambling addiction prevention and treatment efforts have been widely hailed and winning the Public Awareness Campaign Award for its “Make the Call” initiative, which promotes the Ohio Problem Gambling Helpline is proof of this.

The Buckeye State also won the People’s Choice Award for its “Pause Before You Play” print ad and also took home the Media Award for a WNWO-TV Toledo story about gambling prevention expert Steve Kapela.

The Best Corporate Website award went to TimeOutOhio.com for its vast resources about problem gambling and how to prevent it and last, but certainly not least, the Jim Wuelfing Annual Award for Prevention was given posthumously to Dr. Michael Burke, a leading problem gambling expert.

Ohio offers a wide assortment of programs and resources in place to help people who are struggling with gambling addiction, including the Ohio Problem Gambling Helpline, TimeOutOhio.com, along with a vast network of treatment providers. The Buckeye State has become a national leader in problem gambling, and the awards are proof of their work in this area.

The NCPGs annual conference brings together experts from around the country to share information and resources about problem gambling, as well as ways to prevent it.

Ohio is setting an example for other states by showing that it is possible to effectively address the problem of gambling addiction and continue to work with the NCPG to find new ways to reach people in a proactive way to warn of the dangers of Ohio gambling before it becomes an issue.

In addition to the five awards that Buckeye State members received, the NCPG also recognized several individuals from the state for their work in problem gambling prevention and treatment.

Derek Longmeier, executive director of the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio and Steve Kapela, manager of gambling treatment and prevention at the Zepf Center were both honored for their many contributions to the state of Ohio.

Ohio has emerged as one of the pioneers in the study and implementation of gambling addiction prevention and treatment, and its initiatives have proven to be transformative for Ohioans struggling with this condition. The NCPG’s accolades serve as a testament to Ohio’s visionary leadership and a clarion call for other states to emulate its success.
