Ohio State Football: Quarterback Controversy in Columbus

With their opening day, matchup with the Indiana Hoosiers on the horizon, Ohio State Buckeyes Head Coach Ryan Day is still undecided about who will start at quarterback between Kyle McCord and Devin Brown.

Day recently described the situation to reporters;

“It’s college football. Every year has a different story, every year has a different challenge,” Day said. “I know, in my heart, this thing will work itself out. I’m proud of how the guys are competing, if I felt any other way, I’d say it. But, now they’re going to have to keep pushing through, competing, and if it goes into the season, it goes into the season.”

McCord and Brown are competing to replace former starting quarterback CJ Stroud, who is now working for the Houston Texans.

McCord and Brown Heisman Trophy Odds

The controversy hasn’t changed the Heisman Trophy betting odds. In June, McCord was +2200 to win, which hasn’t changed. Brown was a +3300 on June 8, and he’s still the same price at DraftKings Ohio.

Day said he and his staff are comfortable with either of the former ESPN 300 high school recruits running the offense but have stopped short of naming a starting quarterback for their September season opener with Indiana.

“We’re going to keep working; we don’t have to make that decision right now,” Day said. “I can tell I am pleased with their progress, and our staff feels strong with both of them playing. With where it goes, we’ll keep putting one foot in front of the other.”

Marvin Harrison Jr Odds Jump

While the Buckeyes quarterback situation hasn’t changed either of the Ohio State quarterbacks’ Heisman Odds, All-American wideout Marvin Harrison Jr has seen his odds jump from +2500 on June 8 to +1800 at DraftKings.

Winning the Heisman as a wide receiver is hard work. Before former Alabama wide receiver, DeVonta Smith won the 2020 Heisman, you had to go back to 1991 for the last wideout to win when Michigan wideout Desmond Howard won the 1991 Heisman. Harrison is fun to watch, he will likely be a top-five selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, but he isn’t winning the 2023 Heisman Award.

Ohio State Buckeyes National Championship Odds

The Buckeyes National Championship odds are still +700 and third on the board just behind Alabama (+600) and two-time defending National Champion Georgia (+220). For any realistic shot at a natty, Ohio State will likely need to defeat Big Ten rival Michigan (+800). That will be a tall order and a good reason not to bet on Ohio State and or Michigan to win a National Championship.

Betting Odds for September 2, 2023, at Indiana Hoosiers

Ohio State opens its 2023 season at Indiana for a Big Ten matchup with the Hoosiers. OSU is a -29.5 favorite over Indiana, and the Buckeyes should win this contest no matter who takes snaps behind center. The Buckeyes have covered the spread their past three games in Indiana and will likely cover the -29.5.

Finally, it isn’t going to matter much who Day traipses out there at quarterback. Both are solid, and the Buckeyes don’t face a difficult opponent until their September 23 encounter with Notre Dame. Day and his staff will have settled on a quarterback by then, and we’ll know much more about the Ohio State Buckeyes when he does.
