Garrett ended his 2022 campaign tied for second in the NFL with 16 sacks, and he also forced two fumbles with four pass deflections and a career-high 60 tackles. He was named first-team All-Pro and was a finalist for the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award in 2022.

Garrett is currently the second favorite to win DPOY in 2023, with odds of +750. He is behind only Micah Parsons (+650). Other defensive players with good odds to win the award include TJ Watt (+850), Nick Bosa (+1200), and Ahmad Gardner (+1500).

Last season, Garrett was among the few bright lights on an awful Cleveland Browns football team. Despite a nasty shoulder injury that would’ve sidelined most, Garrett played in 16 of the 17 Cleveland regular season games and is coming off a career year.
The Browns were a lousy football team last season with a defense that allowed the 25th most rushing yards per game and the most rushing yards per attempt. That wasn’t all on Garrett, but the Browns rushing defense is supposed to have improved, and that will take the pressure off of Garrett, and he won’t feel like he has to make every play like he did in 2022.
Those improvements include the likes of defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and defensive ends Za’Darius Smith and Ogbo Okoronkwo. Those are massive additions compared to defensive ends Jadeveon Clowney and Chase Winovich–Tomlinson easily replaces defensive tackle Taven Bryan and will definitely make Garrett and the rest of the defense look much better than a season ago.
The Browns have a tough schedule playing in the AFC North. Aside from playing the high-scoring Bengals twice, Cleveland has home games against high-octane offenses like Baltimore, San Francisco, Jacksonville, and the New York Jets. The road will be much friendlier with difficult games against Seattle and the Los Angeles Rams, but neither of those offenses should dominate Cleveland, which bodes well for Garrett.
Last season, the Browns’ offense had the ball a second-best 31 minutes per game. That number may decrease with QB Deshaun Watson having an entire season with the offense.A higher-scoring Browns offense is a good thing for Garrett– the Browns should score more than the 16 points per game they scored over their final three regular season games and hopefully more than the 21 they averaged in 2022.
Finally, Garrett is a short favorite to win the 2023-2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award. Garrett has missed just one game over his last two seasons, and it would take a significant injury to keep him out of the DPOY convo.
Parsons is the frontrunner, but if the Browns can somehow win some games with their offense, Garrett can overtake Parsons and win the award. I believe the Browns’ defense will be better than the 2022 version, and Garrett will walk away with the 2023-2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award.
