Wright State (+210)

Wright State is the betting favorite and opened conference play with a victory over Indiana Fort Wayne (IUPUI).  The Raiders bring experience and play at the fastest tempo in the conference with the best offensive metrics in the league.

Trey Calvin is ranked 16th nationally in scoring, and Tanner Holden provides a solid, one-two punch for Wright State, but their best win was over one month ago against Louisiana on a neutral court. The Raiders return to conference play Friday night at Green Bay, followed by a Sunday matchup at Milwaukee.

Youngstown State (+340)

Youngstown State is off to a flying 2-0 start in conference play after consecutive victories over Cleveland State and Robert Morris. The Penguins have plenty of experience, play an above-average tempo, and enter Friday’s home matchup with Oakland riding the nation’s eighth-longest winning streak.

Y-Town hasn’t beaten anyone ranked 130 or below on KenPoms’ ranking list, with losses to Michigan, Dayton, and Louisiana. The Penguins return to Horizon League action this Sunday, hosting Oakland, followed by a Thursday matchup with Northern Kentucky.

Purdue Fort Wayne (+380)

Purdue Fort Wayne has the second-most efficient offense in the Horizon League and is off to a 2-0 start in conference play. Purdue Fort Wayne was blown out by both top 52 KenPom teams they’ve played, but the Mastodons play fast, and they shoot the rock well from everywhere.

The trouble with Purdue Fort Wayne is they don’t play much defense and have been lousy on the offensive glass. Their best win thus far was at home against Oakland, and they return to Horizon League action with a three-game homestand beginning Friday against Northern Kentucky.

Oakland (+430)

Oakland is 1-1 to begin conference play but does have a statement victory at No. 42 Xavier to its credit. The Grizzlies have played a brutal non-conference schedule with six top 73 KenPom teams thus far. Junior forward Trey Townsend played the second-most minutes in the conference and was in the top five in several categories.

Oakland has a decent shooting side but lacks size, which will be difficult for the Grizzlies to overcome. Oakland resumes Horizon League play with a two-game road trip beginning Thursday night at Cleveland State.

Northern Kentucky (+1000)

Northern Kentucky is the defending league champion and is off to a 2-0 start in Horizon League action. They boast the most efficient defense in the Horizon League and lead the conference in swipes they’ve turned into 14.6 points per game. They also have turnover issues, so their best victory was at No. 263 Eastern Kentucky.

Northern Kentucky guard Marques Warrick is fourth in scoring, but the Norse are average shooters without much size or depth. They resume Horizon League play Friday night at Purdue Fort Wayne.
